Import seismic

Module overview

What will you learn in this module?

In this module you will learn how to import seismic volumes from .segy files into Helios. Please note that the term seismic volume may also include data like velocity volumes or low-frequency models.

What input data will be required in this module?
  • Seismic volume in .segy format
What output will you have created by the end of this module?
  • Seismic volume in .su format

Instructions and screenshots

Seismic volumes can be imported from the top menu of the main interface: Project > Import > SEGY.

The file to be imported can be selected upon pressing the Seismic (SEGY) button. Mapping of headers is based on bytes with default values: Inline (189-192), Xline (193-196), Offset (37-40), X-coordinate (73-76) and Y-coordinate (77-80) but these can be changed accordingly by the user if the respective header data is stored at different byte locations.

The SEGY file header can be displayed while the checkbox allows conversion type depending on the machine on which the SEGY was created (Windows, Linux).

The data to be imported can also be previewed while the number of traces for preview can be controlled by the user.

When pressing Import a dialog opens up and asks for specification of the filename. The file will internally be stored in Seismic Unix format, hence the extension of the filename needs to be .su.
